China Bans Export of Gallium, Germanium, Antimony, & Graphite Materials to the United States

China recently announced a ban on the export of key raw materials: gallium, germanium, antimony, and graphite.  These elements are critical in the manufacturing of various high-tech electronic components, and the world’s reliance on Chinese supplies makes this development particularly significant.

The timing of the recent ban is noteworthy.  It follows the United States’ decision to add 140 Chinese entities to the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Entity List.  This list restricts the entities’ access to U.S. technology and products.

China’s export ban underscores the interdependence of global supply chains, which are already grappling with supply shortages and geopolitical tensions.

The Role of Gallium, Germanium, Antimony, and Graphite in Electronics

Gallium

Gallium is essential for producing gallium arsenide (GaAs) and gallium nitride (GaN), which are compounds used in high-speed and high-frequency semiconductor devices.  These include:

LEDs and Lasers: GaAs is critical in the manufacture of light-emitting diodes and laser diodes.

High-Frequency Electronics: GaN is used in power amplifiers for mobile phones, satellite communication, and radar systems.

Solar Cells: Gallium-based compounds improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cells.

Germanium

Germanium is crucial for:

Fiber Optics: It is a key component in the production of fiber optic systems due to its high refractive index.

Infrared Optics: Used in infrared cameras and thermal imaging devices.

Semiconductors: Germanium is utilized in transistors and diodes, often in combination with silicon.

Antimony

Antimony finds its use in:

Flame Retardants: Essential in improving fire resistance of electronic devices.

Semiconductors: Used in the production of diodes and infrared detectors.

Batteries: Increasingly important in the production of lead-acid batteries and newer battery technologies.

Graphite

Graphite’s role in electronics is diverse, ranging from energy storage in batteries to heat management, lubrication, and protective shielding, making it a valuable material in the industry.

Conductivity: This makes it useful in various electronic applications such as in the production of batteries, where it is used as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries.

Heat Resistance: This property is exploited in heat sinks and thermal management systems within electronic devices.

Transistors and Sensors: In recent years, graphene (a single layer of graphite) has gained attention for its potential in creating high-speed transistors and sensors due to its exceptional electrical properties.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Mineral Commodity Summaries, the United States imported the following percentages of these materials from China on average between 2018 and 2021.

This ban of exports is not the first time that China has restricted exports of these materials to the U.S.  Ahead of U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s visit to Beijing in July 2023, the Commerce Ministry required official permission to export gallium and germanium.
