IEC 62474 Updates: Significance for the Electronics Industry in 2023
By: Joseph Lee on September 1st, 2023
In a recent development, the IEC 62474 Database has undergone a significant update, designated as version D27.00. This update holds notable importance within the electronics industry for several key reasons.
Understanding the IEC 62474 Updates
The IEC 62474 Database’s latest iteration, version D27.00, brings forth the addition of two Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) entries to the EU REACH Candidate List. Additionally, revisions have been made to the reference substances (RSL) for the Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) group, addressing errors and eliminating redundancies.
The IEC 62474 DSL is a list of substances (I.e. lead and lead compounds) that manufacturers must declare to downstream manufacturers if the substance is within the product. The list includes the reportable application and threshold level for each substance. The supplier will use the list to determine if a substance must be declared based on its application and concentration.
Substances and Substance Groups added to the IEC 62474 DSL (Version D27.00)
ID | Substance group / Substance name | CAS No. | Typical EEE Applications | Reportable Application | Reporting Threshold |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
00194 | bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulphone | 80-07-9 | Additive for thermoplastic resin (fluoroethane) and fluoropolymers for rubber production | All | 0.1 mass% of article |
00195 | diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide | 75980-60-8 | Photopolymerization initiator; Coating material/paint; UV-curable resin; Resin additive; Silk screen printing ink; Cable assembly (adhesive); Surface treatment marking ink; Solder mask (photoinitiator) | All | 0.1 mass% of article |
Significance for the Electronics Industry
The electronics industry, characterized by its rapid evolution and stringent regulatory requirements, is greatly impacted by these updates. Companies operating in this sector must stay abreast of substances classified as SVHC and comply with the ever-evolving regulations imposed by authorities like the EU REACH Candidate List.
Adherence to these regulations is critical for ensuring product safety, meeting market access requirements, and mitigating reputational and financial risks. Failing to keep up with these changes can result in costly product recalls, legal consequences, and damage to brand reputation, all of which can hurt customer trust and market competitiveness. Therefore, manufacturers who proactively monitor and comply with regulations like IEC 62474 not only remain legally compliant but also demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, quality, and responsible business practices, bolstering their long-term success and credibility in the marketplace.
