Lead Found in 94% of SCIP Database

June 15, 2022 – 94% of the 7.5 million articles submitted to the SCIP database contain lead and its compounds, according to the NGO Chemsec (International Chemical Secretariat).
ChemSec, is an independent non-profit organization that advocates for the substitution of toxic chemicals with safer alternatives. Their findings show that 9 out of 10 articles within the database contain a highly hazardous compound with known harmful impacts to humans.

- Lead is found in the candidate list as an SVHC with reproductive toxicity and endocrine disrupting properties.
- Some uses of lead are already restricted under Annex XVII.

What is the SCIP Database?
The SCIP Database (Substances of Concern In Products) is a list of data concerning materials and substances of very high concern (SVHCs), established by the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) in the European Union. This database was developed in close cooperation with SiliconExpert and other industry stakeholders to reduce the amount of hazardous waste and improve safety for those handling waste.
